Sharjah is the third largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and the only emirate to be apart of the Arabian Peninsula and the Oman Peninsula. Historically, Sharjah has been one of the wealthiest areas in the region, with settlements from over 5000 years ago. Sharjah’s important location on the route to India has made it an important shipping hub. On December 2, 1971, Sharjah joined the United Arab Emirates.

Although Sharjah is not as popular a destination for tourists as Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it is still a good destination in the UAE to visit. Unlike Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it has been less influenced by the west. If a visitor or traveler wishes to experience more of a local Emirati experience, Sharjah can be a good alternative.

Visitors should be aware that Sharjah is a completely dry state, meaning that there is no alcohol sold anywhere. Having alcohol even in your possession is illegal. This is different from other emirates in the UAE, where alcohol is sold in hotels or registered bars and restaurants.

Unlike Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the UAE Ministry of Health administers the public healthcare sector of Sharjah. This means that any law passed by the Ministry of Health is effective in Sharjah, but not necessarily so in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Sharjah, as with the rest of the UAE, offers a high quality of healthcare. Treatment at all public facilities is free for Emirati nationals. Expatriates and visitors have to pay for all medical costs immediately or show proof of insurance. Public facilities in Sharjah are good, but as good as the ones in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The equipment tends to be a bit older, and the staff may have less international experience.

Sharjah also has a private healthcare sector, but it is not as developed as the one in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. There are generally not enough investments in the private sector, which is a problem that the emirate is trying to tackle. The quality of private health facilities is high, but not as good as that of Dubai or Abu Dhabi, while the cost of service is still quite high, it is cheaper than Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Although public health centers also have English speakers, private ones tend to have more, and are generally more used to foreign patients.

Expatriates and travelers going to Sharjah should look into international health insurance. Your home country’s insurance is unlikely to cover medical costs while abroad. With an international plan, you can protect yourself from costly medical bills if in the event you need medical attention while overseas. There are many options available depending on the length of your stay, health condition, personal needs, and budget.
