Expatriates and visitors can also use Jerusalem’s public health facilities. However, services are not free. Patients are expected to show proof of insurance or the ability to pay. Costs for more complicated procedures can be quite expensive, costing thousands of dollars for more difficult surgical procedures. Visitors are recommended to take out an international insurance policy that covers them while abroad. Jerusalem also has private medical facilities. However, these tend to be more expensive. Generally, the advantages of private hospitals are the shorter waiting times, more personalized attention, and more up-to-date equipment.
