Jerusalem Health Insurance

Jerusalem is located within the Judean Mountains, and between the Mediterranean Sea and the northern edge of the Dead Sea. Jerusalem is a holy city for the three Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Jerusalem is an old city with a history that extends back to the 4th century BCE. However, throughout history, it has been destroyed or besieged a number of times.

Today Jerusalem remains a controversial topic for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Originally, after the 1948 war, the city was divided into two parts, East Jerusalem and West Jerusalem. However, in 1967, Israel took over East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War. Although the international community considers Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem to be illegal, and that it should be Palestinian territory, Israel considers it to be a part of their country. Currently, there are around 208,000 Palestinians who live in East Jerusalem.

Israel also considers Jerusalem their capital. However, the general consensus of the international community is that Tel Aviv is the capital of Israel. All branches of Israeli’s government are located in Jerusalem, as well as, the residences of the Prime Minister, President, and Supreme Court.

Jerusalem offers a very high level of medical care at much lower costs than many western countries. Israeli nationals are covered by their country’s national health insurance, which is administered by the country’s four health maintenance organizations (HMO). These HMOs offer Israelis a basic insurance package that provides for most medical treatment. For more complicated procedures, typically, citizens will have to pay for supplemental insurance. However, the basic plan is quite comprehensive and can cover general needs.

Generally, Palestinians are not covered by Israel’s national health insurance scheme. However, most Palestinians, who really need medical attention and cannot afford to pay, can go to Israeli hospitals in Jerusalem for free medical care. This is not always the case, but hospitals do not typically turn away a patient who requires medical treatment. Currently, there are many Palestinian medical personnel who work in Jerusalem hospitals, but no Palestinian-run hospitals.

Expatriates and visitors can also use Jerusalem’s public health facilities. However, services are not free. Patients are expected to show proof of insurance or the ability to pay. Costs for more complicated procedures can be quite expensive, costing thousands of dollars for more difficult surgical procedures. Visitors are recommended to take out an international insurance policy that covers them while abroad. Depending on the length of time abroad, there are different plans that can be adjusted to fit your needs.

Jerusalem also has private medical facilities. However, these tend to be more expensive. Generally, the advantages of private hospitals are the shorter waiting times, more personalized attention, and more up-to-date equipment. In both private and public facilities, the medical personnel generally speak both Hebrew and English.

When looking into an international insurance, always make sure that you have emergency evacuation coverage. Emergency transportation can be a very expensive cost, if you are traveling in a remote area, and need medical assistance. Medical bills have been as high as $100,000 USD for medical transportation depending on where you are and your medical condition.

Below is a list of hospitals in Jerusalem. As with going anywhere unfamiliar, always get to know the hospitals and emergency services in your area before traveling.
